Curriculum Overview:
Our programme of study for reading consist of two dimensions:
- word reading
- comprehension (both listening and reading).
Our teaching focuses on developing pupils’ competence in both dimensions; and different kinds of teaching are provided for each skill.
Skilled word reading involves both the speedy working out of the pronunciation of unfamiliar printed words (decoding) and the speedy recognition of familiar printed words.
Underpinning both is the understanding that the letters on the page represent the sounds in spoken words.
Good comprehension draws from linguistic knowledge (in particular of vocabulary and grammar) and on knowledge of the world. Comprehension skills develop through pupils’ experience of high-quality discussion with the teacher, as well as from reading and discussing a range of stories, poems and non-fiction. All pupils will be encouraged to read widely across both fiction and non-fiction to develop their knowledge of themselves and the world in which they live, to establish an appreciation and love of reading, and to gain knowledge across the curriculum. Reading widely and often increases pupils’ vocabulary because they encounter words they would rarely hear or use in everyday speech. Reading also feeds pupils’ imagination and opens up a treasure-house of wonder and joy for curious young minds. It is our aim that upon completion of our courses all pupils will be able to read fluently, and with confidence, in any subject.

Descriptor:
Each session will last 1 hour and will comprise of the following:
Lesson component: | Description: |
Greeting (5 minutes) | An initial greeting some basic questions and answers in English to make the students feel comfortable. Topics such as recent books the students have read can be discussed. The teacher can discuss the class book with the students and get them to make predictions as to what might happen next, or alternatively discuss the characters feelings at different points in the story or how the students might feel if they were in that situation.
|
Reading 1 (10 – 15 minutes) | The teacher will get the students to take turns reading through the text. The teacher will focus on accurate pronunciation, and will check the students’ understanding of different words within the text along with some basic comprehension questions. Together as a class the topic and theme of the text will be discussed and ideas will be shared. |
Questioning (15 – 20 minutes) | The teacher will print screen the reading component of the text and send to the group chat. Now the teacher will ask the students to answer the questions connected with the text. The students should type their answers and send them to the teacher privately. The teacher will then ask the students to share their answers with the class and discuss together. The teacher will share the correct answer and discuss strategies on the skills needed to answer this type of question accurately. |
Discussion/ debate (10-15 minutes) | The teacher will now share the debate question for the lesson and split the class into two teams. The teacher will assign each team a viewpoint and each member of the team will write down 3 arguments for that viewpoint. The teacher will then give the students an opportunity to share their viewpoints with the rest of the class one by one. |
Reading the class book (the remainder of the lesson) | For each level a class book will be assigned to the students. At the end of each lesson if there is time the students will take it in turns to read through this longer book. Once again the teacher will focus on accurate pronunciation, and will check the students’ understanding of different words within the text along with some basic comprehension questions. The teacher can get the students to make some predictions as to what will happen next, discuss the student’s favourite characters, and the general events within the story. |
Homework | For homework the teacher will set the students a few pages to read from the class book. |
Notes: The teacher can choose which level of the text is appropriate for the class. There are three levels for each text; beginner, intermediate, and advanced (It is best to start with advanced and then simplify if the content is too difficult).
